KWHA APPROVES RENAMING OF KWASU TO ASSU
The Kwara State House of Assembly on Tuesday has approved the renaming of the Kwara State University (KWASU) to Abubakar Sola Saraki University (ASSU).
The approval was sequel to a Bill sent to the House by the State Governor, Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed for renaming of the University.
Reading the report of the House Committee on Education and Human Capital Development, a Member of the Committee, Mallam Idris Sunaboro said in order to justify the need for the change of the name of the University the Committee invited stakeholders for their submissions on the Bill.
Mallam Sunaboro who represented the Chairman of the Committee, Hajia Nimota Ibraheem said five out of the forty stakeholders were against the Bill for the change of the name of the Institution on the ground that State and Local Government resources are used to fund the University, adding that some of those against the Bill admitted the fact that they had benefited immensely from the socio economic and political will of the late political Icon, Doctor Abubakar Olusola Saraki.
Majority of the stakeholders who agreed to the change of name were of the view that other sister Universities that were named after individuals across the country were equally funded with state resources.
After considering the report, the Bill was read for the third time and was finally passed.
