KWARA STATE UNIVERSITY CONDOLES GHANIANS OVER AWOONOR’S DEATH
On behalf of the Chancellor, the Governing Council, Management and the entire Staff and Students of Kwara State University, a message of regrets and heart-felt condolence has emanated from the Kwara State University, Nigeria to the people and Government of Ghana. The Institution has joined millions of Nigerians to condole the Ghanaian President and the entire people of Ghana on the demise of renowned Ghanaian poet and author, Professor Kofi Awoonor, who was killed in the September 2013 attack at Westgate shopping mall in Nairobi, Kenya.
Professor Na’Allah described Awoonor as an Academic guru whose work combined the poetic traditions of his native Ewe people and contemporary and religious symbolism to depict Africa during and after colonization. According to him the 8th Ghana Permanent Representative to the United Nations was a playwright, a political activist, whose works were mostly nonfictional and focused on equality amongst all. Professor Na’Allah said the world has indeed lost an icon and a man endowed with lots of wisdom and experience.
Professor Kofi Awoonor was the first convocation lecturer at the first convocation lecture of the Kwara State University on the 30th of May, 2013.
The Vice - Chancellor noted that Kofi Awoonor will not only be missed for his works but for his contributions as a diplomat who saw to the end of apartheid in South Africa.
